It’s getting harder to make ends meet in Austin. Rents have increased 43 percent since 2003. The new Farm Bill cut $8 billion from the SNAP (food stamps) program. One in three Travis county residents are low income, and one in four children are food insecure.
The Micah 6 food pantry addresses some of the food insecurity that results from these economic changes. Last year, we gave away nearly 500,000 pounds of food to 3,521 households. That’s 18,649 baskets of food!
We’re ready to do the same this year, but we know that the need will be greater. That’s why we’re challenging churches, Sunday school classes, student organizations and other groups to help us fill 4,000 more baskets in the 2014 Food Basket Challenge. Throughout the year, we’ll track donations of food and money by organizations.
Together, we can meet the anticipated increase in people shopping at the food pantry.
